Life is an incredible journey, filled with endless possibilities and opportunities for growth. As young individuals you are at a unique stage where you have the freedom to explore, experiment and shape your future. One invaluable tool that can guide you on this path of self-discovery is goal setting. In this blog, we will delve into the importance of goals setting in the context of understanding your self and how it can be a transformative force in your life
Why do you set goals?
Setting goals is like charting a map for your personal growth and development. Imagine you are planning for a cross-country road trip, without a map or GPS, you may wander aimlessly, missing out on breathtaking sights along the way.
Goals are your map, providing direction and purpose to your life’s journey. Think of Emma, a young artist who dreams of becoming a renowned painter. Her goal is to exhibit her artwork in a prestigious gallery within five years. This goal will not only give her a clear target, but will also ignite her passion every time she picks up a paint brush
Goal setting prompts deep self-reflection. It encourages you to peer into the mirror of your soul and ask fundamental questions. What truly matters to you? What are your strengths and where do you need improvement? Through setting meaning goals, you begin to understand yourself better. Meet Daniel, a science enthusiast. His goal is to publish a groundbreaking research paper in the next two years. This objective will push him to explore and reflect his scientific curiosity further, thereby deepening his understanding of his own interests and capabilities.
Goals can also act as engines that drive motivation. They infuse excitement into your daily routine, creating a sense of purpose that propels you forward. When your goals resonate with your innermost desires, they become more than just targets, they become a source of boundless energy. Imagine Maria, a young social activist. Her goal is to raise KES1,000,000/- for a local children’s home by the end of the year. Every step she takes towards this goal, whether through fundraising events or community outreach, fuels her passion for helping others and reinforces her understanding of her compassionate nature
Having understood why you set your goals; let review how these goals can help you understand yourself better
Discovering your passions: by taking the time to think about what truly excites you, you are better positioned to understand what truly ignites your inner fire. Is it a specific career, a hobby or a cause you are passionate about? Are they a reflection of your passion? If yes, how does it make you feel. If no, how does that make you feel? What measures do you take after reflecting on your goals and your passions?
Explore your Strengths and Weaknesses: when we set goals, we have to confront what we are strong at and what we need help / improvement in. When you succeed, it underscores your strengths. However, when you face challenges, it reveals areas that you can grow. This self-awareness is a key element of understanding yourself
Learning from Setbacks: goal setting is not just about achieving everything effortlessly; it is also about learning from failures and setback. As you work towards achieving your goals but fail to meet your milestones, you learn in the process. These experiences help you build resilience and develop a better understanding of your limitations, capabilities and assumptions
Building Confidence: as you achieve your goals, you will gain confidence in your abilities. Imagine the feeling you get when you achieve a goal you had set out to achieve! This newfound confidence reflects your growing self-awareness and understanding of your potential.
As I come to the end of this blog, I want to share with you practical goal setting tips
Begin small: start with achievable short-term goals. These early wins build your confidence and provide a clearer path to your larger, long-term objectives
Be specific: make your goals as precise as possible e.g. instead of saying ‘I want to be healthier,’ state ‘I will exercise 30 minutes every day.’ By doing this, you can hold yourself to account on the metrics/measure you have put in place
Set deadlines: as they create a sense of urgency and commitment. They also help to hold yourself accountable.
Regularly review and adjust: as you evolve, your goals may change – that is okay. Regularly review your goals to ensure they align with your current aspirations and self-understanding
In your journey of life, understanding yourself is a lifelong pursuit. Goal setting is a dynamic and powerful tool that can help you navigate this path with purpose and intention. As a young adult, take time to set goals that reflect your true self; let these goals be your guiding stars in your quest for self-discovery and personal growth. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination, so enjoy every step along the way.
